Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho

Paêbirú is an obscure Brazilian psych concept album about the four elements (earth, air, fire, water) that was lost to time in a warehouse fire in 1974, causing it to become a massively sought-after lost classic, fetching up to $1500 for vinyl copies.

This recording of the collaboration between Brazilian artists Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho is a wonderfully off-kilter record, full of fantastic hooky and strange tunes that range all over the place, from full-on freakouts to quiet pastoral. The entire range of 1970s hippie Brazilian musician culture is displayed in this record. It’s experimental, but it's relentlessly driven towards fun. If you like good music, you will like this legendary album untouched by time.

The closest comparison might be to combine Amon Düül with Sunburned Hand of the Man and perhaps Double Leopards, if they lived on a commune together in Brazil and recorded while indulging in mass quantities of narcotics.

Seemingly taped live, each track is a dry documentation of the duo's gently rambling improvisations. Far from the recombinant psychedelia of tropicalismo that reigned over the pre-hippie underground in Brazil's bustling metropolises five years earlier, Satwa play bed peace bards. In double-mono, or fake stereo, Satwa is raw, untreated mentalism translated into pure songflow. At times exhausted and dusty – "Atom" – or archaically splendorous – "Valse Dos Cogumelos" – the duo's spiraling scrolls etched in rustic timbres unfurl gracefully. (dusted)

Elomar is one of the most personal Brazilian composers. He expresses in music the culture of his region, a part of the northeast that has developed through the centuries a spoken dialect and a musical folklore based in medieval modal influences received by successive waves of European invaders. His production has an ambivalent quality, at the same time unpolished and sophisticated. His violão playing is very authoritative (in his style), as he had classical formation. (amg)

Beto Guedes

Beto Guedes was an active member of the Clube da Esquina (Club on the Corner), a musical movement that gave national projection to Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges, Fernando Brant and himself. He often shared the staged with progressive rock band 14 Bis and released his first LP, "A Página do Relâmpago Elétrico", in 1977. In the following year, the album "Amor de Índio" featured the title track as the greatest hit in his career, which he keeps going to this day.

Joseph Spence

Sam Charters first recorded Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence on Andros Island in July 1958. Spence, long out of work as a stonemason, had used his time to perfect a unique style of playing. Charters took Spence as a model for what he wanted to hear in other Bahamian guitarists. Originally issued in 1959 as Folkways 3844 and part of Folkways 3847. (folkways)

Os Tincoãs

Os Tincoãs were a Brazilian popular music band from Bahia, primarily active in the 1960s and 1970s. They are named after the Tincoa bird. Surviving member Mateus Aleluia is still very active in singing and songwriting. (wiki)

Primarily samba influenced, with lyrics recurring to candomblé (afro-brazilian religion) imagery.

Samuel Úria

In his debut, portuguese Samuel Úria is Elvis, a black reverend, Variações, Vitorino, Nick Cave and Waits. And it is always good.

For all Samuel Úria has released over the years on street releases, CD-Rs and compilations, for all that has been seen in videos on YouTube or live, his official debut album became one of the most anticipated pieces of 2009.
