Jane
minimal electronics from Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) and Scott Mou. Coconuts is my personal favorite, but all three records are brilliant
"Scotty and I worked together at a record store in NYC. He was a DJ around town and he still is I think. We both really liked dance music and dance music from the very beginning and I mean stomps and shouts and claps and stuff like that. Of course we like all kinds of other stuff too, but it's the dance that gets us going on Jane. We played once at the Animal Collective practice space, but found it much more pleasant to play at Scotty's home in Greenpoint where he had his mixer and simple microphones and we would drink brews and talk about all kinds of things and then play. I would usually sing about stuff I was thinking about that day and Scotty would move with it, playing jams and it would all kind of pour out. We liked all the mechanical robo dance jams from Detroit and Chicago and Germany but we wanted to do something with less 0's and 1's and more souls. Mostly it was about hanging out together and talking and playing music that was about talking together and hanging out and thinking and feeling and having fun and dancing most of all". Panda Bear

António Variações
"António Joaquim Rodrigues Ribeiro, (December 3, 1944 – June 13, 1984) was a Portuguese singer and songwriter. Despite his short-lived career, due to his premature death at the age of thirty-nine, he would, under the stage name of António Variações, become one of the most culturally significant performing artists of recent Portuguese history. His recorded works blended contemporary music genres with traditional Portuguese rhythms and melodies, creating music which for many is symbolic of the liberalization that occurred in Portuguese society after the Carnation Revolution of 1974. The original and provocative nature of his recorded works has led to him being widely recognized as one of the most innovative artists in the recent history of Portuguese popular music." (wikipedia)

Black Ox Orkestar
Black Ox Orkestar began in the summer of 2000, the project of four Montreal musicians, all members of A Silver Mt. Zion - Thierry Amar (also of Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Scott Levine Gilmore, Gabriel Levine and Jessica Moss. Exploring their common Jewish heritage for sounds that could speak to them today and listening to pre-war recordings of Jewish and non-Jewish music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, they wanted to capture the rawness and emotional intensity they heard there.
Ver Tanzt? (2004)
A beautiful modern take on traditional Jewish (klezmer) tunes and Eastern-European folk, as imagined by a bunch of insanely talented post-rock/free jazz musicians, sung in Yiddish. Essential.
Swans
Children of God (1987)
One of my all time favorites. Dark, menacing, insanely creepy, just mindblowingly amazing. Moments of brutal ugliness are balanced by touches of sheer majestic beauty… Gira’s vocals and lyrics are more fucked-up, wounded and brutal than ever, while Jarboe’s angelic voice provides a perfect contrast. Genius.
White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991)
Angry, big, beautiful, more powerful than ever.
Soundtracks for the Blind (1996)
cd 1
cd 2
The weirdest, bravest thing they've done. Lush orchestration + dark, eerie soundscapes + post rock + doom and gloom and despair + transparent moments of majestic, heavenly beauty.

Pussy Galore
Pussy Galore was an American noise garage punk band from 1985 to 1990, formed in Washington, DC. Being young Jon Spencer’s first band, Pussy Galore was reknowned for their sonic punk/blues violent disharmony, capacity for sheer noise power, an utter contempt for the local emocore and straight edge bands, and complete disregard for lyrical decency and songcraft. The band’s earliest incarnation consisted of guitarist and vocalist Jon Spencer, guitarist Julie Cafritz and drummer John Hamill though this line-up would be subject to both change and expansion in later years. Following the self released 7” Feel Good About Your Body, they added guitarist Neil Hagerty, and replaced Hamill with former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert after the band moved to New York City. They further expanded the line-up by taking on then 16 year old Cristina Martinez as a guitarist though she was not really a musician, she had simply taken the photograph for the 7”, and recorded the EP Groovy Hate Fuck. The EP, like all of their early releases, would be self-released on their own Shove Records label.

Neil Michael Hagerty & The Howling Hex
"Singer/songwriter/guitarist Neil Hagerty honed his subversive approach to rock over the course of two decades in two of the underground's most prominent bands. In the '80s, he fueled Pussy Galore's anti-rock cacophony and blurred the boundaries between avant-noise and classic rock as one half of Royal Trux in the '90s. Hagerty also made a name for himself as a witty, if somewhat chaotic, satirist with his 1997 book Victory Chimp. Royal Trux's turbulent existence finally ended in early 2001, just before the release of his solo debut Neil Michael Hagerty, which was released by the Trux's longtime label Drag City. Hagerty's solo career proved to be prolific, resulting in 2002's Plays That Good Old Rock and Roll and the following year's The Howling Hex." (amg)

"The always prolific Neil Michael Hagerty took the name of his group the Howling Hex from his 2003 solo album Neil Michael Hagerty & the Howling Hex. The band -- which featured Hagerty and a cast of mostly anonymous supporting musicians -- debuted later that year with Introducing the Howling Hex, a vinyl-only release limited to 500 copies." (amg)
