Paul McMahon

Paul McMahon (1986)

"Without Paul McMahon's songs in my life the world would really be a dark and difficult place." -Sharon Gannon, co-founder Jivamukti Yoga Center.

Lucifer

Big Gun (1972)

"The retarded finger-pluck fuzztone and barely there percussion adds to the sheer smegma of the entire thing. This one will fester on the back of your mind as a feasible theme song for the ugliest aspex of hippie chauvinism, and in the addition the sometimes megalomaniacal urge for self-expression that the desire to fornicate can bring about among aesthetically challenged men."

''All that we worship Syd, Roky and Skip for, with the caveat that a complete deprivation of any discernible talent brings about, but even though the art and craft of the recorded output of the mighty Lucifer could be ignored (and was), it shouldn't.'' - Ugly Things

The Scene Is Now

Total Jive (1987)

Total Jive could only be made in NYC around 1987. Most of the members of The Scene Is Now were active in the no-wave scene (Information, Mofungo and later also Pere Ubu & the DB's). Somehow Total Jive always remaind obscure, while in my eyes it's a total masterpiece. In these songs all the standard rock 'n roll ideas are thrown away. Without sounding like abstract avant-garde work, these songs are all very loose, always changing structure, but still remain to achieve their goal. This truly sounds like a couple of goofy no-wave and jazz musicians, with no real musician ship, are trying to create pop songs. This is already my favorite, hope it does the same thing to you, enjoy

Grippers Nother Onesers

Grippers Nother Onesers - At Slimer Beach (2010)

from Volcanic Tongue:
''one of James Ferraro’s greatest sides, Lamborghini Crystal’s 1992 Cool Runnings, now remastered and rebirthed as Grippers Nother Onesers’ At Slimer Beach. The LP is built around amazing disco/psych/drone/glam songs with high, high vox, gospelised choirs, repeat rhythms, jamming wah guitars and that beautiful, refracted-through-a-sea-of-fug sound that characterises all of his best work. Joyous, profoundly affecting and seemingly broadcast from a bedroom in the 1970s that still harbours the slowly decaying ghost of progressive disco/funk/glam dreams, the set runs from primitive NY Dolls-styled trash through full ensemble Aquarian musicals.''

The Tape-Beatles

The Tape-beatles - Music With Sound (1991)

''Beginning with analog tape recorders, and later expanding to include digital technology and film media the group has used collage techniques to create works that challenge the notion of ''intellectual property''. Their works make extensive use of materials appropriated from various sources through a process they call "plagiarism".
The group's initial focus was to create music that made use of techniques borrowed from musique concrete, but applied to popular music context. To this end, they eschewed conventional musical instruments, instead contending that tape recording and the recording studio itself was their instrument.''

Caroliner

All the records Caroliner make are pushed into handmade sleeves, as you can see above (most of the time a plain sleeve with hand colored drawings pasted on them) and always come with hand written lyric sheets.
The use of traditional instruments and styles, often combined with harsh noise, avant garde like drumming and rattling vocals, make Caroliner - Rise of the Common Woodpile an album full of weird and stupid music which, is to a lot of people, totally unstructured but listen close and you will hear, how weird it might sound, songs. that why those lyric sheets are there, to make the listener aware of the fact that they are listing to songs not to some weird improvised mess.
It's like avant-everything.
