This 7'' single includes recordings which can be named as the origins of Animal Collective. Automine formed at the time Dave Ponter (a.k.a. Avey Tare), Brian Wetz (a.k.a. Geologist), Josh Dibb (a.k.a. Deacon), Brendan Flower (a.k.a. BARR) and David Shpritz were in high school.
The songs all have a strong Pavement influence, only rawer, slower and more lo-fi.

The word on the street is that Dälek should billed as alternative or metal-infused hip hop, but I can't help but feel the people who do so are missing the mark. Hip hop is fundamentally a derivative art form; there is no specific sound that you can point to and say 'that is emblematic of hip hop'.But, I'll turn around and say that Dälek is most certainly a bastion of the philosophy of hip hop. It's about digging through the collective music consciousness for new sounds to appropriate. The sometimes industrial, sometimes prog, sometimes raga-laced beats laid out by Oktopus serve as a solid foundation for MC Dälek's politically polemic verses. Enjoy.

Bored by the guttural, blood-and-gore stylings of an increasingly stagnant death metal scene, Mameli, Uterwijk, and Foddis -- who didn't hesitate to voice their increasing interest in jazz fusion -- put out a reactionary, uncompromisingly odd creation with album number four, 1993's Spheres.
Boasting increasingly strange arrangements; off-kilter, jazzy rhythmic structures; and an abundance of synth-guitar textures from Mameli and Uterwijk, Spheres left most of Pestilence's fan base cold, and alienated the group from its label, which reportedly strongly disliked the record. (amg)

The best release from the most well known post-godspeed band, heaps of nice sounding instruments. If you haven't seen the film Mister Lonely by Harmony Korine yet I suggest you do so straight away, it uses the awesome song 13 Angels Standing Guard 'round the Side of Your Bed in one of my favorite scenes from any film ever.

"Founded in 1973 in the Los Angeles area, Ya Ho Wha 13 is a psychedelic band fronted by Father Yod, spiritual leader of the religious cult/commune called The Source Family. The band recorded nine LPs full of their extreme psychedelic sound with tribal drums and distorted guitars, some of which were completely unrehearsed jam sessions, while others contained more conventional rock songs."
These are the original 9 LP's. The best place to start is probably "Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony" and "I'm Gonna Take You Home".
